Rare, original woodcut map of the world on two sheets joined at the center 56 cm x 38 cm. First featured in the 1532 Basel edition of Huttich and Grynaeus's'Novus orbis regionum', decorated with border vignettes attributed to Hans Holbein the Younger (14971543). Striking images of winged angels at the poles turning the World on its axis thirteen years in advance of Copernicus's theory of the rotation of the Earth in'De Revolutionibus' and showing the inclusion of a strait between North America ["Terra de Cuba"] and South America.Richly decorated with fabulous sea-monsters, galleons, elephants, mermaids, and exotic natives. Varthema, the first Christian known to have visited Mecca, and from 1502 to 1507, he extensively explored India, Indochina and Indonesian Archipelago. His account of his travels, Itinerario de Ludouico de Varthema Bolognese (Rome, 1510), was one of the most captivating of the early period of global exploration. This imprint features "ASIA" printed in large letters, and "Tropicus Capricorni" printed above the tropical line as in the first. Harrisse calls this large type the first issue.
