Historical Map of the World. With the publisher's imprint bottom left: Geographical Map of the World.

Published by R Juigne, no. A genuine antique World map with remarkable detail and annotation. It is an English version of a French map by Emmanuel le Sage (aka Emmanuel Las Casas), published by F Juigne who gives his address as Cavendich Square. Juigne is listed in Tovey's Dictionary of Mapmakers as being a Paris-based publisher, who issued various editions of Casas's Atlas Historique.

I believe these were published between 1802 - 1835. A fascinating map, as clear a picture of the World as it was at the start of the 19th century as you could find. It gives a huge amount of information about the various explorers, both in the text below the map, and on the map itself.

The text is titled "General Observations" and "Upon Discoveries in General", the latter being divided into'Navigators who have taken the direction of the South-East', also'Navigators of the Atlantic only' and'Navigators in the North-West Track.... Navigators who have taken the North-East Track. On this map by Juigne, the South Pole is described as...

Impenetrable to all human efforts whilst the at North Pole'We do not know, and probably never shall, whether these parts are sea, constantly frozen and deep, or whether they are a cluster of islands and shoals, or even whether they are not a continuation of land, which unites the 2 Worlds under the Pole. In New Holland (Australia), in the north-east, This Coast is the only one explored. The animals are very extraordinary.

The kangaroo was brought from here. " Japan on the other hand is noted to have a population "civilised and well governed. " Exports are noted in Persia "Citrons, peaches and apricots" and also in China "Oranges, Porcelane, &c. " In North America, Eskimaux are described as "innocent, deformed and tawny... " What is now the USA is mainly populated by "Indians" who have "no certain belief.

There are many more details to be found in this fascinating world view, the map of which has strong original handcolouring. Size: the sheet measures 73.5cms x 50cms.

Condition: Two stains on the left hand side. Two small slits in the top margin on either side of the title. Otherwise this map is in a good condition with fine original handcolouring.
