De L;Isle Geographum Parisiis Prostat nune in Officina Tobiae Conradi Lotter. Decorative double hemisphere map of the World, published by TC Lotter in Augsburg in 1775. The map shows an number of early conjectural coastlines, including an incomplete coastline for Australia and New Guinea, New Zealand, the Northwest Coast of America, Northeast Coast of Asia and some interesting conjectural coastal outines in the polar regions. The Sargasso Sea is also shown very prominently.
Several apocryphal contacts with Antarctica are also shown, although Lotter does not attempt to tie these possible discoveries to the unknown southern continent. The map is perhaps most noteworthy for the many early routes of exploration shown, including the routes of: Megellan 1520? - Gaetani 1542 - Mendana & Gallego 1568 - Le Maire 1570 - Mendana & Quria 1595 - Noord 1600 - Schouten 1616 - Tasman 1642 - Dampier 1686. Approx 64cm x 53cm including margins with central fold as issued.
Combination of original hand colour and additional later colour (cartouche). Excellent condition with some tone spots to the margins and across the hemispheres and the left & right margins tight but clear, perfect for mounting and framing. Worked with his father-in-law, Georg Matthaeus Seutter who he succeeded him in 1756.
After inheriting half the copper plates from Seutter, he set up his own publishing house in 1758. He was succeeded by his brother Andreas, his sons Matthaeus Albrecht, Georg Friedrich the elder and Gustav Conrad, and his grandsons Gabriel and Georg Friedrich the younger.PRINTS MAPS HISTORICAL DOCUMENTS POSTAL HISTORY BOOKS POSTERS STAMPS POSTCARDS EPHEMERA And anything else that is considered Antique and made of Paper.
