1740 Homann & Doppelmayr map of the World in Hemispheres ORIGINAL MAP

1740 Homann & Doppelmayr map of the World in Hemispheres - ORIGINAL MAP. This scarce circa 1740 map by Johan Baptist Homann and Johann Gabriel Dopplemayr depicts the world in hemispherical projection. The map is surrounded by beautiful illustrations and tables.

Depicts the Western Hemisphere and the Eastern Hemisphere with continents outlined in color and major cities, especially in Europe, identified. The map notes several interesting features appearing in maps from this period. California, is depicted an island and New Zealand is shown without a eastern coastline. In the Eastern Hemisphere, Japan appears twice on the map with a note below one attributing it to an error by Sanson who had placed it too far east. The Caspian Sea appears in its embryonic state and the western coastlines of New Guinea and Australia are joined to depict a single landmass.

Much of the eastern and southern shores of Australia were unexplored at the time this map was issued, which is reflected here. The map is based on astronomical observations by prominent astronomers with coordinates established for 138 places, all of which are noted in tables above and below the map proper. Elaborately engraved illustrations surround the hemispheres with cherubs using various instruments to make astronomical observations. His business was carried on through the 18th century by the Homann Heirs, also prolific and popular mapmakers. He traveled throughout Europe studying in Halle, Utrecht, Leiden, Oxford and London.

Their most elaborate work together was the "Atlas Coelestis". The Lunar crater'Doppelmayr' and a minor planetoid are named in his honor. This world map, considered one of the most interesting world maps of the 18th century is a beautiful example of decorative cartography and a great example of their work. The map is in good condition with some toning and discoloration along the edges and the centerfold. Creases and wear along centerfold repaired on verso. Discoloration from framing tape along the top borders. Publication: Johann Baptist Homann, (Nuremburg) 1740. Engraving with original hand coloring.
