Map with margins: 24 3/4" Width x 19 1/4" Height. Printed image only: 20 3/4" Width x 14 1/2" Height. Some paper waviness, largely found along outside paper margins due to previous exposure to atmospheric moisture/humidity, while out of frame. This wonderful, most likely mid to late 19th century restruck large folio sheet map was taken from the original early 17th century world map by Henricus Hondius, the prolific Du t ch cartographer. The woodcut is printed in black ink on woven vellum paper and is hand painted with opaque watercolor paint, giving the map a particularly rich appearance, with ample color helping to delineate the continents. Several pictorial corner vignettes portray various personages of the period, including the cartographer himself, Henricus Hondius. Aside from the waffling of the paper, largely confined to the woodcut print's outside margins, the map remains in very good condition.
High case typography is found in a top banner and several framed boxes contain further explanation of the map's contents and features. There are no edge tears, unsightly stains, holes or repairs. From a well-appointed South Shore Massachusetts fine estate, complete with an antiquarian library, period antiques and 17th and 18th century period furniture and decorative accessories.
