Original 1707 Homann DOUBLE-HEMISPHERE WORLD MAP California as Island Windheads
Scarce first edition of Homann's highly decorative double-hemisphere map of the World, showing California as an island and richly embellished with Celestial models of the northern and southern hemispheres. The map is titled Planiglobii Terrestris cum utroq Hemisphaerio Caelesti Generalis Exhibitio in a large banner held outstretched by two cupids holding torches. The cupid on the right-hand side has the astronomical symbol for Venus situated above his head, while just below his sash is the symbol for Mercury, the messenger and a god of trade, profit and commerce. Both cupids also have a six pointed star on their foreheads, often used as the symbol for Saturn. Four smaller spheres surround the double hemispheres, the two larger ones showing the stars in the northern and southern hemispheres. Numerous windheads surround the spheres, and the lower section is richly engraved with natural wonders, including volcanoes, whirlpools, and a rainbow, extensively described in the written text. Details on the map include the routes of explorers Tasman, Dampier, and Magellan, with an incomplete depiction of Australia and New Zealand, augmented with place names from the discoveries of Cartenz and Nuyts. This map was published by Johann Baptist Homann, Nuremberg, in 1707, prior to his appointment as geographer to the Holy Roman Emperor. The image area measures 49 x 57.2 cm [19¼" x 22½"] on a larger sheet, with generous margins on all sides. Later editions of this map were redrawn to show California as a peninsula, attached to the mythical land of Terra Esonis. This map is in very good condition, with a few filled holes in the title area; small closed tears at the center fold and upper right, archivally repaired; and a faint wash of color in northern Asia. The map has been backed with conservation-grade Japanese tissue to give it stability. Please see the scans, including the view below of the reverse side, and feel free to ask any questions.
