A new general atlas with 53 maps - A. Arrowsmith 1823 - Darwin - RARE. A few random maps have been chosen for the purposes of photos, many more in the atlas.
Arrowsmith, hydrographer to the King, exhibiting the boundaries and divisions, also the chains of mountains and other geographical features of all the known countries in the world comprised in fifty three maps from original drawings. And by Longman & Compy.
A copy just like this version formed part of the Beagle library when Charles Darwin sailed around the world beginning on the 26th December 1831. I have not been able to another copy of this exact work. Wear up and down the spine and bumps / wear to the corners. Someone has also scored a Star of David into the back cover as per my photos. Internally all maps are present and seem to be in very nice condition considering age, no loose pages.
One page also has a Star of David drawn onto the back of it. To the front an initial blank page that would have been there when the front cover is missing, just the tissue paper remains, it is quite crinkles and torn. Top right hand corner of title page torn / missing. Most of the tissue separators remains, but a few are missing, those that do remain may have little creases / tears. Initial pages may have age toning around the edges from being read / handled.
In my opinion it is still a very nice copy being almost 200 years old. A 200 year old publication that has been read / used so has signs consistent with age. 11 ¾ high by 9 3/8 wide. What you see is what you will receive.I have included a number of photos and these probably describe the item better than I can and form part of the description.
